Water Balance Assessment

The Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy (DNRME) Technical Services team will assume management of the former Goondicum Ilmenite mine post disclaimer on or about 30 September 2020.

A supplier is being sought to provide the following services:

  • Assess the containment performance of the water management system with a particular focus on the north west pit sumps;
  • Identify solutions to improve the containment performance to manage the risk of discharge for the upcoming wet season with a focus of storage rather than pumping due to access restrictions; and
  • Implement formalised spillways on the sumps to manage the risk of failure in the event of overflow.

1.1SCOPE

The scope of works shall include:

1.1.1Water Balance Modelling

  • Review storage capacities, particularly the capacity of the pit sumps, using the most recent site aerial and topographic survey (i.e. LiDAR) and update if required;
  • Review catchment areas using the most recent site aerial and topographic survey and update if required;
  • Review and update the model as required based on the current pumping information available
  • Simulate the model to assess current containment performance (base case scenario) at each discharge point from the system and report results for discussion with DNRME.
  • Meet with DNRME to discuss results and agree on an acceptable level of desired containment based on risk considering the short duration to execute works and potential short life of proposed solutions;
  • Based on agreed level of containment performance simulate additional scenarios (assumed maximum of 3) to improve containment performance with consideration for drainage diversion, pumping, additional storage and combinations; and
  • Provide a summary report outlining the proposed approach, results and recommendations.
