RoadTek are required to undertake safety improvement works on the Peak Downs Highway (Eton to Mackay) between Chainages 62 to 87.
The Peak Downs Highway is a strategic link in Queensland’s state-controlled road network linking mining and agricultural activities in the Bowen Basin and Central Highlands districts to service industry in Mackay and the ports of Mackay and Hay Point.
The highway is the principal freight corridor supplying the coal mines of northern Bowen Basin. The route carries significant volumes of freight, including oversize and over-mass (OSOM) vehicles carrying large mining equipment, as well as local and commuter traffic, including drive-in, drive-out mining workers from Mackay, Moranbah and Emerald.
The Peak Downs Highway from Eton to Mackay, is a two-lane road with bitumen seal widths nominally between 9.0 – 11.0m. Traffic volumes vary between 5,834 vpd between Eton and Walkerton, 9,500 vpd east to Eungella Road and 16,180 vpd to Mackay.
