Section 1

Tender Overview

The Queensland Government is seeking information about potential technology solutions to prevent driver distraction.

The Government acting via the Department of Transport and Main Road (TMR) is constantly exploring opportunities to reduce distraction and improve road safety through implementation of evidence-based policy, education, technology and regulatory / enforcement initiatives. TMR is now conducting a more focused exploration of technology solutions to reduce driver distraction from technology while driving.

Depending on requirements the technology may include:

  • Software – Mobile applications downloaded by every-day drivers as they choose to opt-in for the solution;
  • Hybrid – a combination of hardware devices, generally required to be plugged into the On-Board Diagnostic II port accompanied by software requiring download and installation;
  • Sensory – Devices that require integration into vehicles using sensory technology such as eye-tracking cameras and steering-wheel grip sensors (primarily observed in the regulated heavy vehicle / commercial industry); and
  • Enforcement – Stationary and / or mobile technology leveraging cameras and automated image profiling to identify illegal driver activity due to distraction and subsequent issuance of penalties in accordance with road rules.

For detailed information on the specific goods / services sought under this tender, please review the "Request for Information" in "Section 1 - Background and Requirement".
